New Nonprofit Organization
Leads Effort to Empower Communities and Fight Discrimination Online
San Francisco - September
14, 2000 -
Founders of the new nonprofit
organization called the Online Policy Group
(http://www.onlinepolicy.org) today announced the incorporation of the organization
and pledged their commitment to universal access to the information available
on the Internet.
The groups' founder is Will
Doherty, an expert in online discrimination issues with twenty years of experience
implementing programs for a variety of nonprofit organizations. Prior
to founding the Online Policy Group, he served as the Director of Online Community
Development at the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation, where he focused
on the online rights of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender communities. He
managed GLAAD's Digital Media Resource Center in San Francisco, cultivating strategic
partnerships in Silicon Valley and beyond.
"In today's world, people
must have access to online information to participate fully in society," said
Will Doherty, Executive Director of the Online Policy Group. "The Online Policy
Group assists communities that have traditionally faced discrimination and are
not reaping the benefits of the promise of universal access on the Internet."
The Online Policy Group
provides research, outreach, and action on online policy issues such as online
access, online privacy, and digital defamation, serving communities such as the
lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender community, racial and ethnic minorities,
women, youth, elderly, and disabled communities.
Doherty is joined on the
initial Online Policy Group Board of Directors by Roger Klorese, founder of Queernet,
and David Gudelunas, a graduate student specializing in filtering software issues
at the Annenberg School for Communication at the University of Pennsylvania.
Initial Online Policy Group
Advisory Board members include David Sobel, General Counsel of the Electronic
Privacy Information Center (EPIC), and Karen
Schneider, a librarian and recognized expert on Internet filtering software.
The Online Policy Group
is accepting nominations for additional legal and advisory board directors and
is seeking a diverse pool of applicants. The organization also seeks volunteers,
interns, and contributions of equipment, goods, services, and funds.
The Online Policy Group
has an informative web site at www.onlinepolicy.org
