BRIEFING ON CAPITOL HILL RAISES FREE SPEECH CONCERNS OVER ANTI-TERRORISM "PATRIOT ACT" ON ITS SIX-MONTH ANNIVERSARY

On Thursday, April 25, members of the Free Expression Network, Senator Russ Feingold and Rep. Patsy Mink will mark the six-month anniversary of the passage of the USA PATRIOT Act by raising concerns over threats to free expression that have arisen since the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. Lucy Dalglish of the Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press will speak about threats to press freedom.

The briefing will be held at noon at the "Senate Swamp" (across from the Senate steps on the East Front of the Capitol.) In the event of rain, the briefing will be held in Room 216 of the Senate Hart Office Building.

Representatives from member organizations of the Free Expression Network will be present to answer questions. They include: American Booksellers Foundation for Free Expression, American Civil Liberties Union, Electronic Privacy Information Center, National Coalition Against Censorship, and People for the American Way.

A statement signed by members of the Free Expression Network about the first six months of the USA PATRIOT Act will be released at the briefing.
